Technology and Its Discontent

September 2nd, 2007

The joy of technology drives many to wander the aisleways of BestBuy and Fry’s searching for the latest gadget that promises to solve a problem. In our market-driven economy, many consumers enjoy the pleasure of playing with the latest technological enhancement. Unfortunately, technology often fails to perform as promised. And it never fails to teach you something.  My first computer taught me many lessons.  It was a Tandy Color Computer with 16 kilobytes (16,000 bytes) of memory and storage on a tape recorder’s tape.  That compares to this computer that I use with 512 megabytes (512,000,000) of memory and 60 gigabytes of storage (60,000,000,000). The lessons I learned continue to serve me to this day.  First, backup your work.  I often watched as hours of work disappeared in a heartbeat as a circuit blew and the power disappeared. Always keep duplicate files in a portable device that can bring a project back from the dead.  Second, technology demands perfection.  Computers only work when the software and entry methods offer perfect input.  You must master the machine and its working to make it perform correctly.  Frustration follows those who do not accomplish every step perfectly.  Read instructions carefully and memorize keystokes to simplify projects.  Third,  do not be afraid of mistakes.  Most computers are very forgiving and allow you to make mistakes and recover with minimal damage.  Fourth, find the Save button.  On the Internet, use the Save button and not the Back arrow.  The work I have lost with that error is amazing.

These are just a few of my foibles.  Enjoy the joys and laugh at your mistakes.  There is little you can usually do but cry in the midst of technology’s carnage.  Then go back and redo your work.
